Have you heard of living off grid? Living off grid means that your home doesn’t use any power that it doesn’t generate (no outside power sources such as electricity from the utility company). Not only does it help the environment by reducing your impact on the environment, but you will save money by not having any utility bills as well.

If the idea intrigues you, but you think it will be too much work or you’re not in a financial position to go off the grid yet, you might want to consider starting small by reducing the amount of trash you contribute to your local landfill. This is also a good way for apartment dwellers to start reducing their negative effect on the environment as well. One of the easiest ways to do this to learn how to compost.

Composting is very easy; it literally happens on its own, once you have a compost bin (or an out of the way area in your yard that receives sunlight for a few hours a day). All you have to do is add the correct ingredients, and you’ll be reducing your trash and making quality fertilizer for your garden or flowers at the same time.

From your kitchen you can add all your leftover vegetables, fruits scraps, egg shells, house cutting, coffee grounds (and filters), plant cuttings, egg shells, leftover rice or pasta (without the sauce), and stale bread. You can also put your yard waste such as grass clippings, small twigs, and dead plants into your compost pile.

What your trying to do is get a good balance of wet and dry ingredients so your compost will naturally decompose the food matter, making it into rich fertilizer. Once you’ve begun your pile, all you need to do is stir it once a week or so (turning it, so to speak), and check on it that it’s breaking down. If you notice that it’s too dry, you can always add water to make it more moist.

Everyone should consider having a water feature at home. The benefits are well known and wide ranging, and there are so many different fountains available that they can be incorporated into any size of home.

One of the main advantages of having indoor water fountains is that the sound of peacefully trickling water is well known to be stress reducing and calming. The lovely sound can help mask any irritating noises in your environment and it is especially helpful for anyone suffering from tinnitus or ringing in the ears. The fountains are natural humidifiers, counteracting the dry atmosphere created by heating systems during winter, or naturally dry air in a hot summer. Dry air can increase asthma, dry skin, and various respiratory ailments and complaints. Static electricity increases when there is little moisture in the atmosphere so water fountains can also combat the effects of televisions, computers and other electronic equipment. They can even act as a water supply for your pets.

You can place your water fountain almost anywhere you like: they come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate any situation: wall features, floor fountains and table tops. If you have a large entrance hall, a wall feature or corner fountain surrounded by plants will make an immediate impact when arriving home. Generally speaking a water feature such as this will be a focal point of a room. A table top fountain is more suited to smaller spaces such as an office and because of what they are, they have the added advantage of being completely portable. The quiet trickling water is more suited to an area which is intended for peace and quiet.

Even if you are unmoved by any of these advantages, nobody can deny they are beautiful and a great asset to any home adding to, and enhancing, your decorating scheme whether they are doing so quietly in the background or as a main feature.

DIY solar panels are made by creating a device with interconnecting photovoltaic cells, or solar cells.  These cells collect energy from the sun and turn it into efficient electricity.  Each solar panel is only able to provide a limited amount of energy.  For this reason, several DIY home solar panels must be made and installed to meet the home’s complete power needs.  Energy collected during the sunlight hours is stored in batteries to provide uninterrupted current to the home.

The high initial cost of installing a home solar energy system may make it prohibitive for some families.  One solution to this problem is to learn how to make DIY solar panels.  The panels can then easily be installed following simple instructions.  This is a great way to save money on a new home solar power system.

DIY solar panels are increasingly popular due to the increase in electricity rates across the country.  The process has become easier and more efficient with improved kits and plans for DIY home solar panels.

A variety of DIY solar panels kits are available to meet almost any budget.  The kits provide simple installation and provide all the materials and instructions that are necessary.  Solar panel kits come complete with solar cells, the converting device, wiring, and batteries.  If money is a serious concern, the actual solar panels can be built from scratch.

This is a fairly simple process consisting of a few basic steps.  First the solar cells must be connected and affixed to a support device.  Then a conductor must be arranged beneath the cells.  The converting device is connected at this point, followed by the storage batteries.

As many batteries may be used as is necessary.  The batteries must be protected within a battery box.  After a correct installation, the new DIY solar panels will begin providing clean, free electricity within hours and will begin recovering your investment immediately.

Some smaller-scale options can also reduce your home’s carbon footprint while helping lower your energy bills.  Good first options include DIY solar water heaters and DIY solar heating panels.  A variety of solar powered household devices are becoming commonly available.
