If you are interested in installing solar panels for your home you need to consider whether to hire a company to do the work for you or if you prefer to do the work yourself. Just like anything else, there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

There are so many advantages of solar energy that we could never list them all here but if you are ready to install solar panels in your home you are probably already well aware of them. They certainly will save you money but what is the best way to go about getting them? While a company can easily come and professionally install them for you, it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars more. Though it’s true that they already know what they are doing and will go through the process of securing the necessary permits and permission from the city so if you can afford to do it and don’t want the hassle, it may be well worth it to you to simply hire it done. Not to mention, there are government grants and incentive programs that can drastically reduce that cost for you.

If there is no way to ever fit such a thing into your budget, you can opt for DIY solar panels. There are numerous Internet sites that give you detailed step by step instructions for constructing your own solar panels for a mere fraction of the cost of hiring a company. Many of these claim that you can build yours for no more than $200! Though relatively simple to do, you should be aware that they could affect any homeowner’s insurance or property insurance that you may have. Though that may be an acceptable risk to you, you should still check into it and know the details before undertaking a project of that magnitude. You will also need to know about your city’s safety codes and secure any permits you might need.

Whichever way you choose to go, solar power will save you money and is great for the environment. There is never a bad time to go green!

Effective Soundproofing

There are a lot of false claims in the soundproofing industry. One way to discern effective soundproofing materials from their ineffective counterparts is to compare the products STC rating. All proper soundproof materials will include in their literature a sound transmission class rating for comparing other products. As a reference, most interior walls in your home likely have an STC rating of less than 40. However, it doesn’t take much of an increase to see dramatic improvement, as it is generally accepted that any value over 50 is mostly soundproof.

One product which is extremely effective is soundproof drywall. Boasting an STC rating of up to 58, soundproof drywall is one of the most effective techniques available on the market. It is created by embedding particles of a porcelain composite into the gypsum making it extremely dense. Being that mass blocks sound, soundproof drywall is very effective. However it’s benefits exceed it’s simple design. Soundproof drywall is much easier to install than any other soundproofing method as it can be used as a direct replacement for regular drywall. It is also much harder to “short circuit” the installation a common problem with alternative soundproofing techniques.

Installing Soundproof Drywall

The ease of installation of soundproof drywall comes at a cost. With a pricetag of up to 10 times as much as regular drywall, soundproof drywall is quite expensive. However, it is often prefered by contractors because it is so easy to install. Simply clean up and reveal the studs of your wall, prepare the cavities with extra insulation and foam pipe insulation, and screw the sheets of drywall to the studs. There are no complicated measurements, designs, or messy materials to use. The only recommendation is to leave a gap of ¼ inch around the seams of all walls to be filled with non-hardening silicone.

Changing the wall color in your home can go a long way in giving a room a whole new look and feel. There are many things to consider when choosing a color. Though you should obviously keep the existing furniture in mind, there are some other factors you should know about as well. Different colors have different psychological affects on the people who are in the room.

Red raises the energy level. It invokes feelings of love and passion and sometimes anger as well. It also can stimulate good conversation so the living room, kitchen or playroom would all be good choices for the color red because these rooms usually see a lot of activity.

Crimson can cause feelings of rage and hostility so that is probably not a good color choice for any room of your house. If you really want to use that color perhaps it would be best as an accent color.

Yellow communicates the joy of sunshine and happiness. It make people feel optimistic. However it is the most difficult color on the eyes so it’s best used in small spaces or large rooms that do not have a lot of wall space. The kitchen is a good choice for the color yellow.

Blue is a great color for a bedroom or living room. It actually lowers blood pressure and slows respiration and heart rate so it is very calming. If you are not careful though, lighter hues can look cold and a little sad so it is best to accent it with warmer colors through the other décor of the room.

Purple can have the same calming affect as blue though it does not appear cold or sad. Some shades suggest femininity or wealth. It gives a rich depth to your color scheme and is a great accent color.

Green is an all around great color for just about any room of the house. With the same calming affect as blue and the same cheerful affect as yellow, it is relaxing and stylish no matter where it is. It is also believed to be good for fertility so some like to put it in the bedroom as well!

Orange is a good color for an exercise room as it is exciting and energetic. It can be a good color for other high activity rooms of the house also.

Black, gray, white and brown are all considered neutral colors. They can be a bit drab on their own but work well paired with other more vibrant colors.

Though you would probably not choose your colors exclusively according to the moods they can invoke, it can be useful information when combined with your own personal taste and style. Your own wall painting ideas will make the look exclusively yours. If you need to feed your imagination a little first there are many helpful tips that can be found on the Internet as well as wall art decorating ideas.  Hopefully this helps you create in your home a rich and inviting ambience that communicates your own unique personality to all that enter.
