Black mold is the name given to a a slimy black-greenish mold that can be a serious health risk. Black mold, or Strachybotrys chartarum as it is scientifically named, is a mold that grows in buildings which we live and work. It is strongly associated with the death of infants due to respiratory bleeding and black mold can also aggravate conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. The Center for Disease Control has stated that Strachybotrys chartarum is responsible for around 100 causes of lung disorders.
Almost everybody will find some kind of mold in their home. It is hard for the dangerous molds to be distinguished from the molds that are harmless, therefore all mold should be treated as being potentially dangerous and they should be removed from the home.
Mold is easily transported to other areas of the home via mold spores. The molds spores attach themselves to animals, people and clothing and are then brought to other parts of the home where they can grow in damp and moist conditions. These mold spores can also enter the home through open windows. Areas that have water seepage are also attractive to mold spores. Water leaks and damp areas are causes of black mold growth. To prevent mold growth you must keep areas of your home dry and prevent leaks.
Areas where mold can be found include ceiling tiles, water soaked wood, cardboard, wall paneling and even clothing that is in storage in a dark and moist area. The mold can also be found on drywall and on wall baseboards. These areas are also where other molds can be found, and as previously stated, all molds should be treated as being potentially dangerous and removed from the home.
Black mold needs moisture to grow. It will appear shiny and when it is touched it should easily smear. The only time you should touch the mold is when you have gloves on. You should never touch any area where you find mold with out protection on your hands.
When removing the mold from your home it is important to identify the root of the problem. The area where the mold is found will usually not be that large in size. The mold will be around a damp place. Using one cup of bleach to one gallon of water will help you remove the mold. Saturate the area and let it soak for 30 minutes. Come back and remove the mold.
Mold can be a serious health risk if it is allowed to grow in your home. Removal of any and all mold is something that needs to be done to ensure that the home is safe and healthy.

If you have a beautiful deck in your backyard and have been thinking of adding exterior lighting to it so you can entertain your guests and and enjoy it at night as well, you don’t have to spend allot of money. Not only can deck lighting be inexpensive, it’s easy to install depending on what type of lighting you buy. A good option is to use solar deck lighting because you don’t need to worry about wiring power to each light and planning where all the electrical cables will be laid out.
Here’s a few outdoor deck lighting ideas that you can use to add lighting to your deck:
- Use post lights (lights that sit atop the posts of your fencing on the edge of your deck) to light up the general area of the edge of your deck. These are available in a few different colors besides the standard white and you should consider mixing them up to make different effects. If you have allot of fencing you shouldn’t put one on each post as that would be overkill.
- Use step lights to light up your stairs leading to and from your deck. These are led low voltage lights that cast a dim light so your guests can see where they are going, not only making your deck look better but also helping prevent stumbles and falls.
- String patio lights on the railings of your deck to create a fence high line of light at night. Another good idea is to wrap string lights around a few posts to create a candy cane effect. If you combine both together you can make a wall of light on your deck and if you use different colors you can create numerous effects.
I hope these ideas give you a good start to making your deck a beautiful place for your guests and family at night.
