If you are thinking of building your own home, you might be wanting to be as environmentally-friendly as you possibly can.  The issue of green home building is a really hot topic as governments around the world really want to make sure that we can bring down our greenhouse gases as much as possible.  So bear this in mind when you are looking at construction loans for a new home.

Recycled and Sustainable Materials

Although there are many fantastic materials to work with when building a home they are either not sustainable (such as natural stone) or they cause a lot of pollution (such as concrete).  Knowing what products will have the least impact on the planet is very important.  Such materials you should consider include straw, recycled wood, car tires, old telephone books and wool.  It’s actually amazing to see what’s out there if only you take the time to look.

Insulation

These days are there are regulations set out for different materials to insulate your home however you should always try to go a step further by investigating all the different types of insulation and where they can be placed.  There are people buying shredded up telephone books, denim and fiberglass which are pumped into the attic.  You can also get insulation which is made from sheep wool.

By insulating your home really well you will also be able to save money because the heat won’t be going straight out via your walls, roof and windows.  You certainly don’t want to spend more on your heating bills than is absolutely necessary.

Alternative Energy

Alternative ways of producing energy has really taken off in recent years.  Before they weren’t all that brilliant and cost a lot of money.  Now you can buy solar panels, wind turbines, ground-source heat pumps and even a water turbine if you happen to have fast flowing water near your home.  Not all of these technologies will be suitable for your own purposes so it’s best to take the time to really think them through.  There’s no point in having solar panels on your roof if you live in an area where there’s not much light, otherwise they’ll just sit there doing nothing.

So there you go, just a few things to think about when going green.  There are loads more tips out there so please don’t rush into anything too quickly.  Also make sure you know exactly what grants are available in your area to help you out with the expenses.
