Window treatments are a great opportunity to add texture to a room. The choice of fabric you use with draperies and curtains or the different types of material you may choose as an alternative such as blinds or shades is huge. The texture can be changed simply by the way the fabric is hung or pleated.
The simple act of choosing to hang eyelet curtains will change the entire texture of a curtain’s fabric, certainly if the same fabric is hung using a curtain rail and the fabric is gathered into complicated pleats playing the light in a completely different manner.
Another way of changing the look of the curtains in the room is to simply change the color around. Even though the fabric is exactly the same, by switching from a dark color to a lighter color will dramatically alter the tone of the room. In a similar way taking a plain fabric and replacing it with a print will also change the look and feel of the other items in the room.
Finally you will also have virtually an endless selection of fabric types to choose from and these too will change the way a room looks. You may prefer a simple linen or organdy curtain that is functional without being too showy. Alternatively the room you are furnishing may require a heavier curtain so you might go for velvet or brocade.
A light and airy type of room such as a breakfast room or the kitchen would be suitable for gingham curtains or a breezy lace curtain that will blow in a gentle breeze.
No matter what type of curtain or draperies you choose the color and texture of the fabric and the fabric itself will help in the determination of the overall impression of the room. It’s a facet of decorating that must be carefully considered, but the good news is that if you feel that you have gotten it wrong it’s not a big job to replace one lot of curtains with a completely different type.
